Lateral Marks, a nautical term meaning the marking of a clear and safe passage or channel, acts here as a metaphor for work marking points in both spiritual and physical journeys crossing bodies of water including swimming from England to France and From Spain to Africa. Swimming forms an important part of my practice and my work is developing to explore personal landscapes and geographies and how experiences leave marks on the individual. I am curious about the notion of temporary displacement as the body moves through the water making a fleeting mark which disappears without trace and yet the experience leaves profound markers on the self. Work seeks to identify and convey the things that remain with you after the immediate experience has passed – lateral marks etched on the memory part of the personal landscape to inform life paths and directions however subtle.
